The holidays are the one stretch of the year when LAX stops being an airport and starts being an endurance sport. Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, November 26 this year, which means the Tuesday and Wednesday before it are among the heaviest travel days LAX sees all year — followed by an equally packed Sunday on the way back. Winter break stacks another wave on top of that, from mid-December through the first week of January.
None of that is avoidable. But most of what makes holiday travel miserable is not the airport itself — it is everything that happens before you get there. Here is how to take that part off the table.
The 405 is the real problem, not the terminal
Ask anyone who has missed a holiday flight out of LAX and they will rarely blame security. They will blame the drive. A trip from the Valley, Orange County, or the Inland Empire that takes 45 minutes in September can stretch past two hours the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, and there is no app that can route you around it.
Staying the night before your flight moves your departure risk from “whatever the freeway decides to do at 5 a.m.” to a shuttle ride measured in minutes. You wake up already at the airport, which is the entire point.
Build your travel day backward from the shuttle
Holiday crowds change the math. During peak weeks, plan to be at the terminal three hours before an international departure and two and a half hours before a domestic one — about a half hour earlier than you would normally allow.
Work backward from there:
- Departure time minus 2.5 to 3 hours = terminal arrival
- Minus 20 to 30 minutes = shuttle pickup at the hotel
- Minus 30 minutes = breakfast and one last bag check
For a 9 a.m. flight, that is a 6:15 a.m. shuttle and a 5:45 a.m. wake-up — instead of the 3:30 a.m. alarm a drive-in would demand. Confirm the shuttle schedule with the front desk the night before, since pickups run heavier around the holidays.
Do the fiddly parts the night before
The things that slow travelers down at 6 a.m. are all things you can finish at 9 p.m.:
- Check in on the Hilton Honors app and pull up your boarding pass
- Weigh gift-heavy bags — holiday luggage is the most common overweight surprise of the year
- Move anything wrapped into a bag that can be opened, since wrapped gifts can be unwrapped at screening
- Consolidate liquids, chargers, and travel documents into one accessible pouch
- Set out clothes and shoes that make for a fast security line
Two-room suites help here in a way that is easy to overlook: the separate living area means one person can repack the bags with the lights on while everyone else actually sleeps.
Eat before you fly, not in the terminal
Holiday terminal food is a long line and a disappointing sandwich. A made-to-order breakfast is complimentary here every morning, so you can eat a real meal before the shuttle instead of hunting for something open past security. If you are arriving the night before rather than flying out, the complimentary evening reception and the on-site restaurant mean you do not have to go looking for dinner after a long flight.

Flying in for the holidays? Same logic, reversed
Not everyone leaves for the holidays — plenty of families arrive. If relatives are flying into LAX to see you, an airport hotel solves a full house and a late arrival at the same time. It is also the practical answer to a red-eye landing at 11 p.m. when nobody wants to drive across Los Angeles at midnight. Check in, sleep, and start the visit in the morning.
